Readers React: Obama can’t fix everything

Re “Obama’s foreign policy goals founder,” April 26
It never ceases to amaze me how President Obama is held responsible for events he did not cause and over which he has no control.
He apparently is expected to force Russia to retreat on Ukraine. And it is somehow a failing of his foreign policy that the Palestinians announced the formation of a coalition government that includes Hamas. Perhaps the problems between North and South Korea are his fault too.
Come on! Obama cannot be expected to take care of the whole world, especially when there are people in his own country who continually throw roadblocks in his path.

Think back to the euphoria of Obama’s first inauguration.
The jingoistic foreign policy of the Bush administration was gone. We were taking our troops out of Iraq. The prison at Guantanamo Bay was to be shut down. It was to be a new day for the world with a kinder, more inclusive and cerebral foreign policy. The world would love us again.
Fast-forward to today, when the lofty expectations have crashed. There is conflict in Syria and Afghanistan; Russia is on the verge of more land grabs; we’re dealing with an emboldened China; and yet another Mideast peace effort is failing.
Our foreign policy has been characterized by indecision, false promises and the apparent lack of real objectives. It is time for the administration to reset its foreign policy.
