Basketball: City Section is considering Open Division
- Share via
The City Section basketball advisory committee has begun surveying coaches and principals about creating an Open Division for the boys’ and girls’ basketball playoffs similar to what the Southern Section launched last season, Huntington Park Coach Joe Reed said Wednesday.
Reed said early reaction was positive from coaches this summer. To create a sixth playoff division for the upcoming season, the advisory committee will need coaches and principals to return their forms promptly so the idea can be discussed at a meeting of the Board of Managers at the end of the month.
The idea is to pick the best eight teams in the City Section regardless of their division and place them in the Open Division at the end of the regular season. Only one team maximum could be picked from Division II, III, IV or V.
There would be the added cost of another divisional champion, but it’s unlikely to affect City Section representation in the state playoffs.
At least one athletic director complained that the proposal took him by surprise and hasn’t been adequately explained, so it could be difficult to get approved in time for the season.
The City Section has delayed announcing playoff divisions for schools while waiting to see what happens with the Open Division idea.
