Basketball: State playoffs begin in Open Division

Bishop Montgomery (30-1) and Fairfax (30-2), winners of the Southern Section and City Section Open Division championships, will now try to keep their momentum going by playing challenging first-round opponents in the Southern California Regional Open Division boys’ playoffs that begin on Friday night.
Bishop Montgomery faces the No. 1 team from San Diego, St. Augustine. Fairfax plays the second-place team from the Trinity League, Orange Lutheran, which knocked off the No. 1 seed in Division I, Corona Centennial, during the Southern Section playoffs.
Orange Lutheran is loaded with quality guards and could present some matchup problems for the Lions. Home-court advantage should help the Lions.
In other openers, Westchester will be at Mater Dei and El Cajon Foothills Christian will be at Etiwanda.
In the girls’ Open Division, Chaminade will host Narbonne, Alemany is at Clovis West, San Marcos Mission Hills is at Long Beach Poly and Palisades is at Mater Dei.
