UCLA safety Dietrich Riley had “full movement and sensation in all of his extremities,” UCLA officials said after Riley was taken off the field on a stretcher during Saturday’s 31-14 victory over California.
Riley was injured with 10 minutes 41 seconds left in the game, when he collided with Cal running back Isi Sofele. Riley was placed on a back board and taken to Huntington Hospital.
“All signs are positive,” Coach Rick Neuheisel said. “Every test came back negative. He was in great spirits when he left the field.”
Neuheisel said: “I think it was a stinger, where he couldn’t feel anything and then the feeling came back. Caution is the order of the day.”
Rice delivers
Jerry Rice Jr. had his dream come true — part of it, anyway.
UCLA was down four wide receivers because of suspensions handed out by the Pacific 12 Conference after an on-field brawl against Arizona. That gave Rice a chance to play in his first college game. He finished with two receptions for 17 yards.
“I had a good time out there,” Rice said. “It was the most fun I have had in a long time. I’m glad to get the win.”
Defensive stands
California was two for 12 on third down conversions against a defense that had the third-worst third-down percentage in the nation. UCLA, with six sacks through the first six games, had six Saturday.
Record book
Johnathan Franklin gained five yards on the first play of the game, moving him into 12th place on UCLA’s career rushing list. He passed Kevin Williams, who had 2,215 from 1989-92. Franklin finished with 45 yards and has 2,258 for his career. Kermit Johnson (1971-73) is 11th on the list with 2,495 yards.
Nelson Rosario had five receptions for 56 yards to move ahead of Jojo Townsell into 12th place on the Bruins’ career receiving list. Rosario has 1,815 yards. Townsell had 1,773 yards from 1979-82. Cormac Carney is 11th on the all-time list with 1,909 yards.
Prince shines
Kevin Prince, who gained 163 yards rushing Saturday, is the first UCLA quarterback to gain more than 100 yards in a game since Jeff Dankworth in 1976.
First timer
Wade Yandall made his first career start at guard. Yandall played in place of Albert Cid, who was suspended for one half for his part in the brawl with Arizona.
“Guys were counting on me,” Yandall said. “I couldn’t mess up. I had to play for them. The first play, the contact woke me up. I was, ‘OK, we’re in this now.’”
Safety Stan McKay also made his first start.
Injury report
Punter Jeff Locke suffered a sprained right shoulder in the first half but continued to kick.
“I kicked the ball and then got blind-sided,” Locke said.
Locke said he expected to undergo more tests before practice Tuesday.
Quick hits
UCLA’s 31-14 victory ended a three-game losing streak against California.
The announced attendance was 55,604, UCLA’s smallest crowd for a game against California since 2003, when the game drew 53,825.
