Wimbledon tennis: Tips for tourists headed to London
- Share via
As Wimbledon gets underway, VisitBritain — the nation’s tourism agency – has put together a list of attractions for tennis tourists lucky enough to be in London during the tourney. Among them:
--Take a walk through Wimbledon Common, 1,100 acres of countryside with paths, ponds and a brook. Check out the azaleas in Cannizaro Park, once part of the estate of the Duke of Cannizaro. Free.
--Wander around Wimbledon Village and visit the shops, restaurants and bars. The area is “where the city meets the country,” VisitBritain says. Free.
--Watch soccer at Stamford Bridge. Home to the Chelsea Football Club, the stadium is one of the most iconic sports venues in London. The stadium offers tours, from about $26.
--Taste Wimbledon strawberries. These seasonal treats are available not only at the tennis stadium but at many local markets. At Wimbledon, a dish of strawberries and cream costs about $4.
--Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Museum “blends new technology with traditional displays to explore the history of tennis,” VisitBritain says. Tennis news can be accessed through interactive screens. Admission, from $16, is available only to Wimbledon ticket holders during tourney.
--Wimbledon lodging and ticket packages, dubbed the Wimbledon Experience, are available in a variety of packages. Included is one night’s hotel stay, a day of watching Wimbledon, museum admission and a transit pass. Many dates are booked, but as of Wednesday, packages from $340 remained.
